Teacher Talk Tuesday

šŸ“š Find Your Joy Beyond the Classroom: Why Every Teacher Needs Something That’s Theirs

Good Morning Y’all,

Teaching is one of the most rewarding callings on earth… BUT, it’s also one of the most draining. Between lesson plans, grading, parent emails, meetings, and the emotional weight of pouring yourself into every student, it’s easy to lose yourself in the chaos of the classroom. So what can we do to escape the insanity… if even for an hour?

So glad you asked. The answer is simple: you need something that’s yours. Something that isn’t tied to data, deadlines, or discipline. Something that fills your heart, clears your mind, and reminds you that there’s more to life than school.

For me, that ā€œsomethingā€ is sitting on my back porch in the evening with a good pipe and a book on Texas history. That’s my reset button… the moment I exhale, slow down, and let peace find me again.

For you, it might be gardening. Maybe it’s quilting, woodworking, painting, fishing, baking, or photography. Whatever it is… find it, claim it, and protect it like your mental health depends on it… because it does.

You deserve to feel joy beyond your role as ā€œteacher.ā€ You deserve a sanctuary that refuels your spirit so you can show up better for your students, your family, and yourself.

3 Steps to Protect Your ā€œSpecial Timeā€ for Sanity’s Sake

1. Schedule it like it’s sacred.
Don’t wait until you ā€œhave timeā€, you never will. Put your hobby, your quiet time, your peace on the calendar. Treat it like the faculty meeting you can’t miss, because this one actually restores your soul.

2. Create boundaries and honor them.
Let your students, your family, and even your phone know when you’re off-limits. You don’t need to be available 24/7. Boundaries aren’t selfish, they’re necessary for longevity in this profession.

3. Start small but stay consistent.
Even 30 minutes a day can change your whole mindset. Brew the coffee. Step outside. Pick up that paintbrush. Read that chapter. It’s not about perfection… it’s about peace. Protect it, nurture it, and let it become part of your rhythm.

Bottom Line Y’all…

You give so much of yourself to others. It’s time to give something back to you.
Teaching will always be part of who you are, but it doesn’t have to be all that you are.

So find your joy… that one thing that makes you smile for no reason. The classroom needs a teacher who’s not just prepared, but peaceful. And that peace starts when you take time to do what you love.

YOU ARE AWESOME!

Blessings Y’all,
~ Mitch
