đ„ Surviving Bad School Leadership: 3 Power Moves Every Teacher Needs to Know
Good Morning Yâall,
Let me start by saying this: Iâm blessed with an incredible principal right now. Supportive, visionary, and humble. But letâs not pretend thatâs always been the case.
In my teaching journey, Iâve had to answer to some real stinkers. Iâm talking about the âIâm-only-here-to-climb-the-ladderâ types. You know the onesâthey treat the principalship like a temporary pit stop on their way to district office, barely engaging with staff and avoiding tough decisions. Iâve also had micromanagers who placed every move under a microscope, making even the most routine classroom decisions feel like a compliance drill.
If youâve ever had a bad school principal or felt crushed under poor leadership, youâre not alone.
But hereâs the truth:
Your mission as a teacher doesnât stop because leadership fails.
You were called to teach. So teach.
The students in your classroom still need you to show upâmentally, emotionally, and professionally. Thatâs why I want to share three battle-tested strategies to help you stay strong, stay positive, and keep thrivingâeven when youâre working under weak, toxic, or unsupportive school leadership.
As alwyas, if you find this info helpful, please share it with your teacher bestie!

Just Breathe! You Got This!
When dealing with campus leadership who are âless than stellarâ, what can we do?
Iâm so glad you askedâŠ
1. Protect Your Classroom Like Itâs Sacred Ground
Your classroom is your sanctuary. It's where the real work happens. If leadership is chaotic or absent, donât let it bleed into your teaching zone.
Instead:
Set healthy boundaries. Keep your classroom mission-centered.
Develop your own classroom systems that support student growth, safety, and joy.
Focus on what you can controlâyour preparation, your tone, and your relationship with students.
Bad leadership might mess with logistics, but they canât take your impact away unless you let them.
đ§ Pro Tip: Revisit your âwhyâ often. Remind yourself who youâre really servingâitâs not the admin office; itâs the kids.
2. Find Your Tribe and Lean In
Toxic leadership isolates. So fight back by surrounding yourself with educators who inspire, encourage, and uplift.
Join or create a support group of like-minded teachers.
Vent when neededâbut always return to solutions.
Share ideas, collaborate on lessons, and build each other up.
You donât have to suffer in silence. Community is your lifeline.
đŹ âIron sharpens iron.â When you align yourself with passionate educators, your flame stays litâno matter how dark the leadership hallway gets.
3. Stay Above Reproach and Document Everything
This oneâs not as flashy, but itâs critical. When youâre under a bad administrator:
Be professional, consistent, and ethical in all things.
Keep a log of any questionable directives, meetings, or incidentsâjust in case.
Always communicate in writing and cover your bases.
This doesnât mean youâre paranoid. It means youâre wise. And it positions you as a leader of integrity, even when the people above you are losing theirs.
đ Documentation isn't dramaâit's defense. Stay sharp, stay clean, and always take the high road.
Bottom Line, YâallâŠ
There are going to be seasons where your school leadership is anything but inspiring. Some principals are checking boxes on their resume. Others are so deep in the weeds they forget theyâre leading people, not spreadsheets. Itâs frustrating, itâs drainingâand itâs real.
But donât you dare let it knock you off mission.
Youâre not in this profession for recognition. Youâre in it for redemptionâfor showing up, lighting a fire in young hearts, and pushing back the darkness with knowledge, kindness, and truth.
If leadership stinks? Rise anyway.
If you feel undervalued? Teach anyway.
If it feels unfair? Grow anyway.
You were called to lead from your classroom. So lead.
You were called to teach with passion. So teach.
You were called to shine, no matter how dim the office down the hall becomes.
So no matter what kind of leadership youâre working underâgood, bad, or barely-thereâyouâve still got what it takes to make magic happen in your classroom. Youâre the heartbeat of your studentsâ day. Youâre the one who brings the energy, the passion, the order, the laughter, and the love. So walk into that room tomorrow like the pro you are. Own your role. Command the atmosphere. Be the reason a kid feels seen, safe, and inspired. Youâve been called to this workâand trust me, youâre more powerful than any poor leadership above you. Now go out there and be awesome! You've got this. đđ„
